Common vs. Proper Nouns

Sort

Title in your notebook, “Sorting”. In your notebook, make a T-chart: Common Nouns on one side, Proper Nouns on the other. Click on “Start”. (You may have to disable Pop-Up blocker). Sort the nouns, and write down where each noun belongs. Record your score.

On top of one piece construction paper or on the poster, take a color marker and write:

Go through old magazines cutting out pictures that apply specifically for each category, i.e., common noun or proper noun, gluing them onto the correct space and labeling them.

Activity #11
Extension Activity:
Write a poem, using a concrete noun as a comparison for an abstract noun. For example, you could talk about “faith” as a “ring” that always stays with you. The poem can be in any form, but should be no less than 8 lines. Write your poem in your grammar notebook.

Write a fairy tale about any animal being outside of its group. Make sure you include the name of the group, or the collective noun, for the animal you chose. In your story, you might have your animal join another group of animals. The more collective nouns you use, the more EC points you will receive.

Take 3 neutral profession nouns, like “Teacher” for example (but use 3 different ones). Explain what the reasons, if any, are for our society to associate those words with certain genders. Make arguments why this is unfair, and biased. Come up with 3 ideas for helping us to promote fairness in terms of our views of these words, and act upon one of them. See me if you need help for clearer understanding.
